Department of Anesthesiology, Union Hospital affiliated to Tongji Medical College,
Huazhong University of Science and Technology has a long history. It is now a first-class center
for clinical, teaching, and scientific research in anesthesia both at home and abroad. In 1890,
chloroform anesthesia was adopted amd performed in 630 operations. In 1934, hexobarbitone
sodium was first successfully applied to intravenous anesthesia, which came up to advanced
world standards. Two unigue forms of regional anesthesia were performed as well in the same
year. In 1955, Prof. Jun-jie Liu, a famous anesthesiologist, the winner of the Life Achievement
Award for anesthesiologists by the Chinese Association of Anesthesiology, pioneered
               anesthesiology in Wuhan Union Hospital.

Professor Jun-jie Liu was born in a literary family in Gedian Town, Wuhan, Hubei Province,
on March 15th, 1922. In 1939, he studied at No. 12 State Secondary School in Changshou,
Sichuan Province. After witnessing Chinese compatriots suffering from cold, hunger, and illness,
he gradually developed his ideal to become a doctor and save people’s lives. After graduation
from high school in 1942, Professor Jun-jie Liu (Figure 3) enrolled in the School of Medicine,
National Central University (now is Nanjing University). In 1948, he returned to his hometown
Wuhan after his graduation. In 1950, the Korean War broke out, he resolutely signed up for the
medical team of Resisting U.S. aggression and aid Korea.

In the 1950s, Prof. Liu chose the thoracic surgery
department as his profession when he returned to Wuhan.
After witnessing anesthetic techniques’ backwardness, Prof.
Liu decided to be an anesthetist and started from almost
nothing. After that, Prof. Liu devoted himself to
anesthesiology and fought for it all his life. In 1954, Prof.
Liu came to Zhongshan Hospital in Shanghai and studied
from Prof. Jue Wu, one of China’s modern anesthesiology
and clinical pharmacology. After returning from Shanghai,
he pioneered the anesthesiology department in Wuhan Union
Hospital without a single halt. Since 1955, Prof. Liu had
been mainly engaged in anesthesia. He gradually grew into a
professor and director of the Department of Anesthesiology
from an ordinary anesthetist through unremitting efforts.

Fig 3. Professor Jun-jie Liu in the college

In clinical practice, Prof. Liu particularly stressed anesthesiologist’ sense of responsibility
for the occupation. He believed that anesthesiologists should always consider patients and attach
great importance to patient’ perioperative safety. “Never be content with what you have done”,
