“I listened to their plan and go to implement their plan, but I knew in the back of my mind that that was not the way it was going to go. I thought how I would react if I were doing it my way.
“And I don’t know what it was, but I could see what was happening in front of me and make a decision.
“And sometimes many of the decisions I made in moving my soldiers or getting us out of a deep fire fight came without thinking. I was just instructed to do things that seemed to work.
“The soldiers began to like me and even the US and Vietnamese counterparts began to trust my judgment. That started the basis for me, not to disobeying orders, but trying not to lead my people into what was not in their good health, safety, morale or welfare that I would prepare for what I felt were other people making the wrong decision.”
