That’s the way I looked at life. If only I had business success, I would be fulfilled. If only I had a nice house and lived in a great place, I would be happy. And on and on.
I remember our last move and how much I liked buying things – a new car, a new refrigerator, etc. That pleasure lasted only moments before thinking about the next thing in my life that I needed to make me happy.
The other way to look at the same thing is “when...”
When I have a nice house, I will be happy. When I experience living in the mountains, I will finally know peace. When I connect deeply with my wife, we will find joy in our relationship.
All of this can be very real, but it brings only a sense of brief pleasure.
We can hang on to the “if onlies...” and the “whens...” our entire life. We can accumulate great things, great relationships, but none of these experiences bring us lasting fulfillment.
Being worked on by life
The reality of my existence is that I am being worked on by life.
