is type of exibility aligns well with Millennial values, especially for supporting multichannel communication. Older generations communicate in a more linear, serial manner, but Millennials are hard-wired for multitasking, where using voice, chat, email in concurrent fashion is the norm. For them, UC will be highly intuitive, and you should expect them to be your early adopters.
UC is especially applicable to working remotely by providing another form of exibility, namely the ability to work where and when this demographic desires. e 9-5 o ce routine is a pre-Millennial construct, and IT must recognize that while these employees work di erently, they can be just as productive as their o ce-based co-workers. E ective communications are the key to e ective collaboration, and as multichannel options proliferate, UC makes home-based working viable regardless of how many modes Millennials choose to use.
MUST-HAVE #2 – VIDEO
is can be viewed as a standalone application or a subset of a broader UC solution. Either way, enterprises are coming to recognize the business value of video, not just for the senior ranks, but

MUST-HAVE #3 – CLOUD
Cloud is having a transformational impact
on everything it touches. Video is a prime bene ciary of the cloud, so these must-
haves are somewhat connected. More than anything, cloud is a business strategy where decision makers – not just IT – prioritize resource allocation according to what’s
best for the organization. When it comes
to communications technologies, the cloud provides unprecedented options, and this plays well for remote working.
What’s really important for Millennials is exibility for work and being mobile-centric. Home-based working checks o several boxes for keeping them happy (and therefore reducing turnover), but this isn’t the only form of remote working. Millennials are just as likely to be on the go while working – outside of the o ce
or home – so mobile collaboration is another factor in the equation.
Enterprises simply cannot accommodate this shi with a premise-based UC solution. What the cloud brings is a secure, scalable platform that allows employees to have a consistent experience and interface with collaboration applications from any location, endpoint or type

for everyone. Today’s video tools are cost- e ective, easy to use, manage, and deploy - plus they deliver a great user experience across all screens, even mobile devices.
When it comes to real-time collaboration, nothing beats video when people cannot meet in person. In today’s distributed organizations, that’s becoming the norm, and video will appeal to Millennials for three reasons. First, all forms of communication for them are social, including business. Both building community and being engaged with that community is core to their DNA, and video is perhaps the most social communications application of them all. ink about how this will help build internal project teams, create user groups to get feedback with customers, conduct training sessions across multiple branches, etc.
A second reason ties into the theme of this series, namely enabling remote working. Not only does video make it easy to be a virtual team member while being home-based, but
it’s also great for one-to-one sessions. Home working isn’t for everyone and isolation is one of the biggest drawbacks. Even when making video calls on a smart phone or a PC, remote workers can still connect with o ce mates in impactful ways than with chat or email. is is another aspect of being social that will resonate with Millennials, making the work-from-home experience more rewarding.
e third reason is simple, but may be the most important adoption driver. Part of being tech-savvy is their comfort level of being on camera. Video is part of being social, and with it being so commonly used in their personal and very public lives, using it for work isn’t a big leap. Older generations have a much di erent back story, and tend to nd video intrusive.
In time, their comfort level will rise, but for now, it won’t be seen as an everyday form of communication.
of network.
While it’s true that most enterprises are not
ready to go all-in with cloud, there’s enough exibility with cloud-based UC to o er various tiers of deployment. For some organizations, the best option is to adopt the hybrid cloud approach, which allows for a mix of cloud
and on-premise solutions that helps with the transition mindset for creating a next generation workplace. I’ll explore this further in future posts, and will next focus on how home-based working is causing enterprises to rethink bigger picture issues around the Next Generation Workplace. ■
