vendors and wireless mobility management (WMM) vendors. Quantity and cost are the main variables that have historically driven optimization activities and the primary focus has been on correcting or improving service-to-cost performance using trailing consumption and usage patterns. e telecom services landscape
is changing, though, and change in the types of services being used and the way in which they are used dictates that organizations should rethink optimization activities to include business-driven use cases as the third variable in the equation.

A mobile-, application- and UC-driven workforce interacts with telecom services di erently than in the past. Users have
several modes of communication available
and consumption of each mode varies. Understanding what telecom services are available, how they are used and why they are selected over other available options is required to baseline demand against optimization opportunity. For example, many organizations have several web conferencing and audio
coexist across an organization. Users may have access to one or more of these services and they may select them based on di erent communication criteria.
Understanding how and why each service
is used allows usage models against business- de ned use cases to be established. ese
usage models enable ‘conscious optimization’
– optimization with full consideration of all telecom services, systems and applications against user and business use cases. is new approach expands the scope of understanding about the services being optimized and improves the accuracy of optimization recommendations to achieve desired business results. ■

Q: Does Apple’s DEP replace MDM technology?
A: No. Apple’s Device Enrollment Plan (DEP) helps organizations deploy corporate- owned Apple devices. It offers touchless configuration and set-up to organization specifications
and enrollment with corporate managed MDM technology. DEP
is a companion to MDM with a
key benefit of supporting MDM configuration on the device without the need to touch or connect to the physical device.
Q: Are wireline carrier service plans that eliminate common surcharges legitimate?
A: Yes. Several competitive carriers offer all-on-one pricing that bundles service line charges with surcharges like USF and PICC into a single monthly charge. While the monthly charge may be slightly higher for an all-in-one service,
it may be more cost effective if surcharges and fees are stabilized on a monthly basis for the term
of the agreement as compared
to traditional pricing models with variable surcharge and fee rates. Note that taxes are not commonly bundled into an all-in-one charge, so adding taxes to the stated charge provides a total monthly carrier
cost figure for evaluation against traditional pricing models.
