away from prominence as better alternatives developed.
With chat, email and SMS all increasing in usage over the past two decades, one would think faxing would’ve been sent out to pasture long ago.
But that’s not the case.
In fact, the Fax over IP market has continued to grow 15% annually since 2009. Love it or hate it, faxing is here to stay.
While some organizations have already done away with faxing completely, the heaviest of
fax users, bound by privacy regulations, have not and the latest developments in fax over IP technology will have a transformational impact on their business...and possibly yours.
While fax over IP implementations have le a bad taste in the mouth of many MSPs due to reliability and support issues in the past, that no longer need be the case.
Further, new fax technology is gaining traction with MSPs due to:
●  e sunsetting of the traditional PSTN;
● Federal privacy and data security compliance requirements;
● And o ering the essential communications bundle.
 ese three trends in Fax over IP (FoIP) represent an opportunity for MSPs and communication service providers looking to expand beyond their basic o erings and ride what may be the last wave of massive IP adoption away from analog infrastructure.

Timing: e Intersection of Cloud Technology and the Sunsetting of the PSTN
It goes without saying that public cloud adoption has kicked into high gear in the past few years.
What you may not realize is that the adoption of cloud based fax over IP services has grown as the technology and the transport protocol (t.38) matured.
 ere’s two primary reasons.
One, the analog circuitry that heavy fax users have relied upon for decades is slowly but surely being removed and support is disappearing. is means that businesses who have relied
on expensive muxxed and unmuxxed PRIs, or good old fashioned single RJ-11 copper lines to deliver secure, reliable faxing are going to have an issue.
Second, managed service providers capable of deploying FoIP solutions are poised to displace the PSTN for the same reasons that VoIP began dominating market share: consumer demand for lower pricing, increased redundancy, and improved features.
 e continued demand for faxing combined with lack of supply for traditional methods provides ample, lucrative opportunity.
MSP’s that can o er modern solutions, at better costs, with improved features, will nd selling to these largest industry verticals a
NOT GOING AWAY
Security breaches can be costly for businesses, but those that deal with patient records, insurance forms, prescriptions, legal documents, contracts, nancial records, transcripts, invoices, etc must comply with stringent HIPAA and SOX requirements that prevent medical and nancial information from being held in an unsecured manner.
Although a physical piece of paper being printed from a fax machine still gives plenty
of opportunity for misuse, the primary reason that fax over IP has historically been avoided in heavy fax using verticals is speci cally because of these security requirements.
 is means that MSPs looking to provide
fax business need to be aware of the di erence between compliant and non-compliant fax over IP services.
Stored fax services using HTTPS have been around (and reliable) for almost a decade; however, because they are stored before they are forwarded to a new destination they
are disquali ed for anyone under security regulation, though they are perfectly suitable for many businesses (and are therefore prevalent)
It’s important to seek partnerships with companies that o er both reliable and secure solutions that are compliant under federal and states security laws, both for their sake, and for the sake of the customers that they are looking to attract.

di erentiate and stand out in this crowded space is an easy way to slow, painful decline.
One way smart MSPs are di erentiating
and winning is with a competitive bundle of communications services. While this is not a new concept or strategy, it’s still an e ective one. O ering a FoIP solution, alongside voice, email and SMS, gives every business the “Core 4” that they e ectively communicate today.
Even if you customer (or customers) are not bound by federal or state regulations, they still need to receive and send faxes on occasion. ese occasions can turn into time consuming nightmares when one is not prepared because they’re without the right solution at hand.
When you need to send and important fax, it’s not the time to try nding a “free” or “trial” electronic fax account to send it.
O ering a FoIP solution with your voice, email and SMS o erings helps eliminate this nightmare and puts your customer in the position to have everything they need at their ngertips. is makes them stickier and less likely to go nd another vendor, because all of their needs are met through you.
Plus, the extra bump for you in MRR is always nice ;)
With the faxing market still going strong, the sunsetting of the PSTN near and the need for di erentiation via a competitive service bundle more necessary than ever, smart MSP’s should consider the bene ts of adding faxing to their tool kit. ■
