As more developments continue to be made over the next ten years, 5G-powered devices – everything from laptops to wearables – will be mainstream, 5G-connected autonomous cars will be a reality and will disrupt entire industries, including farming and agriculture.
The Growth of IoT
In 2018, Gartner predicted that global growth perspective for traditional telco revenue streams, such as mobile phones and fixed lines, will only be 3% CAGR in the next three years. Comparatively, the expected growth in the IoT area of connecting
sensors and assets is expected to be 25%, with one-third of this new revenue growth accomplished with new digital IoT services.
As expectations for the execution of IoT solutions increase, service providers will
need to have end-to-end vertical solutions ready to go to market. To do this, providers will supply IoT-as-a-service platforms that
can be tailored for specific customer segment or industry needs and makes it possible to monitor and control thousands of devices remotely and without difficult installations. This might include asset tracking in transportation, industrial machine monitoring in manufacturing or new public services
businesses wanting to make full use of their VoIP network.

to drive transformation in the industry. While there will be tremendous pressure on service providers to capitalize on network investments in the next year, those who do so successfully will set themselves up to build profitable businesses.

While it’s not news that traditional business models have been disrupted by wireless technologies like narrowband IoT and 5G, this year should prove how these technologies will shake out. As the year unfolds, we can expect answers to questions like: Will 5G live up to the hype? Or, will IoT get more traction?
With that said, let’s dive into what I believe is in store for these two innovations in 2020.
The 411 on 5G
There’s no doubt that the industry will experience real 5G uptake this year. In 2019, we saw the successful launch of early 5G networks, release of 5G phones and customer signups for 5G data plans. The U.S. and Asia started 5G spectrum auctions and executions, with the FCC completing three high band spectrum auctions and planning its first mid-band spectrum auction, and the UK and Europe are following suit by preparing for their own auctions. With more bandwidth and speed for
sending and receiving data, 5G will give service providers the ability to support new services, applications and use cases. For example, the promise of high-speed and extremely low latency means that ad-hoc use cases such as self-driving car or long- distance surgery will be really executable with 5G technologies.
Service providers will enter a new area – offering private networks to the industry to replace fixed infrastructures with cheaper and easier-to-use wireless connections. Expectations will be very high that providers will offer horizontal market solutions to their customers, such as asset monitoring and process control to reduce costs.
