Video Conferencing Comes of Age

by Octavius Gould, General Manager, North America at 3CX (www.3cx.com)
It seems that it wasn’t too terribly long ago that video conferencing was considered a luxury and “nice-to-have” but not life or
death to a business. Fast-forward to today and it has quickly evolved to become a pertinent communications tool that is essential to many businesses around the world. So, what changed? Well, simply put, as more and more people
in business experienced the bene ts of video conferencing and its technology has evolved, it’s become much more mainstream.
Perhaps the biggest step forward in video conferencing is the same technology that made our living rooms a lot better: high-de nition pictures. But early adoption of HD didn’t catapult video conferencing in and of itself, simply because it could be quite a load on a network. With advances in video compression technology, however, that is no longer a hurdle. Video quality is now gorgeous and vibrant, and the user experience – which can’t be understated – is streamlined and reliable. No one wants to implement the latest and greatest technologies into the o ce if it doesn’t work properly!
And studies show that employees who regularly use video communications achieve better internal collaboration, leading to greater productivity. At that point, video conferencing is an investment in your organization, not an expense. is is particularly important with the growing number of workers now working remotely. Whether they’re across town or in another country, remote workers still get that important “face time” with their colleagues or customers on a regular basis.
Maybe the most important bene t of video conferencing is o en overlooked. ink of the money you can save on business travel. Who needs airfare, hotel costs, cab fees and meals out when you can have the same conversation face-to-face from the warmth of your own o ce? Sure, there are plenty of times when business travel is a necessity, but a good video conferencing system can reduce some of the more super uous travel meetings. e ability to see facial expressions and body language can make long-distance meetings more productive
