Definitions and When a child has severe choking, give thrusts slightly above the belly button.
Key Facts These thrusts are sometimes called the Heimlich maneuver. Like a cough, each
thrust pushes air from the lungs. This can help remove an object that is block-
ing the airway.

Action: Follow these steps to help a choking child:

If you think the child is choking, ask, "Are you choking?" If he nods

4 Get behind him. Wrap your arms around him so that your hands
are in front.

Make a fist with 1 hand.

Put the thumb side of your fist slightly above the belly button and
well below the breastbone.

Grasp the fist with your other hand and give quick upward thrusts
into the abdomen.

Give thrusts until the object is forced out and he can breathe,
cough, or talk, or until he stops responding.
