                                        Anemia During Pregnancy




                   Definition:


                   Anemia is a reduction in the number of RBCs and hemoglobin content with

                   a corresponding reduction in the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood.

                   (I) Iron Deficiency Anemia: It is the most common type of anemia

                   (95%).


                   Daily Requirements:



                   Normal      iron requirement is   10 mg/day of which l mg is absorbed.

                   Requirement increases during pregnancy to 15 mg/ day.


                   Etiology.


                       1.  Inadequate intake of iron.


                       2.  Defective absorption of iron e.g. achlorhydria.
                       3.  Increased demand e.g. menstruation and pregnancy.


                       4.  Chronic blood loss e.g. abnormal uterine bleeding and piles.
