West Shore Jr./Sr. High is a nominee for prestigious achievement award.
Titusville High
Titusville High School and Embry Riddle Aeronautical University teamed up and launched a drone program in the JROTC arena. This Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Course gives students the opportunity to get hands-on experience with drones and hone their skills in surveillance and reconnaissance. As a final project for this semester, students develop a UAS program to improve school security.
Titusville High students use drones to capture images of school celebration.
What’s Cool in Schools
West Shore Jr./Sr. High
West Shore Jr./Sr. High in Melbourne has been nominated once again by the U.S. Department of Education for the prestigious National Blue Ribbon Schools Award for 2018. The school won the award
in 2004 and 2014. If they win this year, they will hold the honor of being the only high school in Florida to have won the award three times (under new criteria established in 2003 to include assessment score gains). West Shore Jr./Sr. high is also one of only 13 Florida public schools nominated this year. National Blue Ribbon Schools demonstrate consistent excellence, and make progress in closing gaps in student achievement.
In addition, West Shore Jr./Sr. High sophomore Kishen Mitra led a team at the American Cancer Society
Relay For Life of South Brevard. He created the group in honor of his former classmate, friends and family members who have battled cancer. Mitra’s team, Tumor Terrors, raised more than $9,000 for cancer research.
Atlantis Elementary
Dedicated Atlantis Dudes/Dudettes (DADs) hosted their final donut breakfast for the year at Atlantis Elementary in Port St. John. The school had their biggest turnout at the event including a visit from Superintendent Blackburn. The DADs group encourages involvement by fathers and all “dudes” who
are part of a student’s life. The group plans to expand their activities in the future including “BROtations,” an opportunity for students to learn to tie a tie, manners and other life skills.
