Golf:
The boys and girls golf teams did great this season, playing their hearts out at matches and improving by the day. With the fresh season of practice and competitions, they have continued the Edgewood golf legacy.
Throughout the fall, the boys won 9 out of 11 matches and the girls won 5 out of 9 matches.
Both teams, with the help of some hard work, ended up going to the Space Coast conference ready to take on their opponents.
On October 15th, the boys and girls teams competed at the A1 district match. The boys earned 4th place and scored a total of 313 points. The girls team brought home 10th
place. They played with aggressiveness and power, but also focus and concentration.
Both teams manifested in glory after districts, and it is sad to say that the season is already over. We have to give credit to the wonderful coaches Woodside and Johnson for getting the golf teams to where they are now.
Each year the teams seem to be growing more fierce and competitive among schools in the county and beyond, and Edgewood is proud to call these golf teams our own.
Next year, hopefully new and old members can continue the teams on a high note and get their scores as good as they can get!
S wimming:
The swimming teams, both boys and girls, played an amazing season this fall and fought hard at the Cape Coast meets to present a tough competition.
On October 11, the Cape Coast Conference meets occurred for both the girls and boys teams, and they both brought great skills and moves to the table. The boys got 8th place and the girls got 10th.
“I am very proud of our team and how we’ve grown. From cheering for our teammates at meets, to the little things like inside jokes,” said Bella Wetzel, 8.
Bella participates on the girls team and has enjoyed the season very much. She has loved the experience and has grown to make new relationships and expand the ones she had from last year.
“Swim has also helped me make new friends and has helped me be able to connect with people that I didn’t know I could connect with. It’s like having 20 other brothers and sisters,” Wetzel said.
Bella thinks that out of all of their performances at their meets, the best one in particular was their meet against Merritt Island High, where they blew them out of the water, no pun intended.
“We beat them by 100 points. For us, that was our best moment as a team,” Wetzel said.
From the beginning to the end, Bella and her team have persevered in all their efforts.
“My goals I had at the beginning of the season were to improve on my time or get first place in my events. They actually both came true,” Wetzel said. “Our team has definitely improved from our first game. We went from having a losing streak to having a winning streak of five. We have all individually grown.”
Next year, she hopes to grow even more as a swimmer and to continue to have great relationships on the team.
Cross Country:
Cross Country requires amazing skills and speed. With Florida’s climate, the sport is even more difficult to play.
Nika Gividen, 8, plays on the team and has really enjoyed the season with her teammates.
“I think our team, both boys and girls, have improved so much this past season. Even through the injuries that our team got, they all pushed through,” Gividen said.
The team’s district meet was played on October 24th, and Gividen had one main goal for it.
“For the most part every meet we went to I broke my last PR [personal record]. I also hope to break my PR for the district meet on October 24th,” Gividen said.
Throughout the season, both the boys and girls had grown with their skills, but also the relationships they have with one another.
“Everyone on our team is so nice and supporting. Especially during meets you talk to your teammates and support them while they are running. You also get to know a lot of your teammates better,” Gividen said.
“What I’ve learned from this past season this year in Cross Country is that there are so many techniques to it than just running. You always need to be using your hands and breathing correctly. Supporting your team while they are running is such a big factor too,” Gividen said.
Mrs. Behler and Mr. Kaltenbach, who coach cross country, have played a big role in the team’s improvements over the past few months.
“Without them, the team wouldn’t have been the
same,” said Gividen.
