to assemble and mail over 6,200 renewal letters! BAC is an organization that places adults with disabilities in the workforce, and have been serving Brevard County for over 50 years. We are excited to partner with this impactful community organization that has been working with our students and families for decades.
BPS has exciting news to share about the new Legacy cards – no more expiration dates! BPS staff have been working hard
to streamline processes and reduce expenses. In addition to removing Legacy card expiration dates, we have made a few other changes to our process to support this mission. Instead of hiring an outside company to produce and mail the Legacy card renewals, BPS partnered with the district print shop to produce the renewals, returning funds to the district.
To complete the mailing, BPS partnered with local non-profit,
New cards should be mailed out in the coming weeks. Below are a few details that should answer questions you may have:
• Current members do not need to submit a new application. If a member has a change of address, email or phone number, they are welcome to submit a new application with the updated information.
• If a member has misplaced their Legacy card, they are welcome to visit one of BPS’s high schools, or district office in Viera to receive a replacement card.
Machining lab provides students with new opportunities
by Jennifer Wolfinger, BPS News editor
Machining Technology students and staff recently celebrated the grand opening of their renovated 4,000 square foot Machining Technology Lab at Bayside High in Palm Bay.
The space houses four large machines in the production lab, two computer-controlled lathes and two milling machines. The school also is home to a welding lab, four 3D printers and a 72” smart board.
Dennis Soboleski, Career and Technical Education resource teacher, said: “Until now, students only had limited access to a professional production area. Students were able to design, model and simulate machining, but had no consistent opportunities for hands-on experiences. This space will allow machining students to receive firsthand training.”
The only program of its kind in Brevard County, the Machining Technology program covers a broad series of topics in advanced
manufacturing with an emphasis on fundamentals and advanced machining knowledge, skills and techniques. Welding and soldering manufacturing techniques and skill development are also being built into the program.
The program offers two industry certifications:
•Certified Solid Works Associate—Students earning this certification are awarded three postsecondary credits in the engineering technology program at any state college in Florida.
•Certified Production Technician—Students earning this certification are awarded 15 postsecondary credits, which is equivalent to one semester.
Machining Technology is a Career and Technical Education program of choice. It is located at Bayside High, but any high school student can apply to participate in the course of study.
