Tempest,” and “The Music Man” are just some of the performances that Harlequins remember
fondly.
Typically, there will be a
musical in the first semester and a straight play, with no singing or dancing, in the second. The Harlequins group is jointly run by Waterman and Rhoden, with Waterman running the musicals and Rhoden directing
the straight plays.
This semester, the Harlequins are presenting William
Shakespeare’s harrowing tale “Macbeth,” a classic tale of ambition, passion, and murder.
“Macbeth” centers around General
Macbeth and his passionate and ambitious wife, Lady Macbeth, who urges him to do the unthinkable: murder the beloved King in order to take the throne.
One student involved in the production is active Thespian Carolina Mangru, 12. Mangru is well accustomed to theatre, as she has been performing locally since the age of eight and immediately joined Harlequins when she arrived at Edgewood.
“I started doing shows in seventh grade, and
I was able to join Thespians as soon as I was in high school,” said Mangru. “I have so many favorite memories from being in shows, but it really comes down to the people. The people in the program are welcoming and kind, and they make the experience worth it.”
For her eleventh and final show at Edgewood, Mangru will be taking on the role of Lady Macbeth in the Harlequins’ production.
Playing Mangru’s counterpart and leading man, Macbeth, is Jack Klonowski, 12. Klonowski, having been in the drama department for only a year, is a fresh face in the familiar Harlequins group.
Klonowski, Mangru, and the rest of the cast are working hard to prepare to present this Shakespearean classic.
“This Upcoming show is my third.” said Klonowski
The Drama Department at Edgewood is expanding
and thriving, thanks to the efforts of Rhoden, Waterman, and every actor, tech, and drama student involved in the program. All of these performers work tirelessly to ensure that these works of theatre come to life- both onstage and in the classroom.
