Heat-Sensing Superpower
Most of the species in the viper family are pit vipers. This means that they have two pit organs found between their eyes and nostrils that give them the ability to find prey in dark or distant spaces. The pit organs allow them to “see” the heat that comes off of warm-blooded prey. That’s as if
you had a built-
in pair of infrared
goggles that let you see things moving
around in the dark! An added perk is
that the pit viper’s sense organ helps it
find the best hangout spots with the perfect
temperature.
