What’s Cool in Space Schools
CHALLENGER 7 ELEMENTARY
Last month, Challenger 7 Elementary in Cocoa, dedicated a replica of the NASA Space Shuttle Orbiter, Challenger to the memory of the Challenger 7 STS-51-Crew: Gregory Jarvis, Christa McAuli e, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka, Judith Resnik, Francis R. Scobee and Michael J. Smith. The space shuttle replica was donated by Charlie and Jennifer Horton
in appreciation to the teachers and sta  of Challenger 7 Elementary with thanks to Caleb Jenkins and Engineering & Metal Fabrication Incorporated of Merritt Island for designing, fabricating, painting and installing the mounting base.
This replica of the space shuttle, Challenger, is now on display at its namesake school, Challenger 7 Elementary in Cocoa.
“The space shuttle replica is located at the front of our school to remind our students to ‘reach for the stars,’” said Tami Lanterman, assistant principal.
ENTERPRISE ELEMENTARY
Enterprise Elementary in Port St. John recently participated in the Barn Hill Preservation free educational animal program. Barnhill Animal Preserve visited the school from Delaware and brought seven of its exotic animal friends. The animals
“During this educational program, students were engaged
in learning about the importance of conservation and preservation. The highlight of this event was the learning opportunities provided to our students and an up-close view of these amazing exotic animals,” said Sandra Marines, assistant principal at Enterprise. “Throughout the presentation, students learned about each animal, their location of origin, habitat, diets, special animal characteristics, adaptations, defenses, survival skills, care in the environment, and e orts towards conservation.”
Enterprise students donated $2,570 towards animal conservation and preservation at the end of the presentation as they were able to pose for optional portraits with one of the animal ambassadors. Monies collected from student portraits was donated directly back into the preserve as a means to further educational programs for students, feed the animals, build healthy and safe enclosures, and provide necessary veterinary care for all animals.
MCNAIR MAGNET MIDDLE
Dr. David Williams, music education professor at the University of South Florida (USF), and Jonathon Kladder, doctoral student of music education at USF recently visited McNair Magnet Middle, in Rockledge, to work with music technology students.

Music technology is a new elective class that was started through McNair’s STEAM magnet grant. In the course, students have the opportunity to create and compose their own music through the utilization of keyboards and iPads in conjunction with music theory. The students and visitors collaborated
in small groups on sounds and used their devices to create original compositions.
“Having USF share their knowledge with our students was an exciting and memorable way to expose them to future college and career possibilities,” said Michelle Scheen, music teacher.
Saturn Elementary kindergarten teacher, Jane Araguez, was named the 2016 Teacher of the Year.
SATURN ELEMENTARY
Jane Araguez, kindergarten teacher from Saturn Elementary in Cocoa, won this year’s noteworthy title of BPS’Teacher of the Year.
Araguez is extremely involved at school and serves as a member of the math leadership team, Lego League, school coordinator of Walmart Math Night, Math Contact, and Spanish translator, among many other roles. When confronted with needs for her students, this teacher  nds a way to  ll that need, even using Crowdsource funding to purchase  exible seating for the classroom when she noticed students  dgeting in their chairs.
She received this noteworthy title at the ABC (Applauding Brevard’s Champions) Awards Gala, presented by Community Credit Union and hosted by Brevard Schools Foundation, on January 25, 2017 at the King Center in Melbourne. During the gala celebration, BPS recognized and revealed the winners
of various categories including: Administrators of the Year, Volunteers of the Year, Foundation Awards of Distinction, and Employee of the Year (EOY).
