Ever notice how many of Brevard Public Schools are named for something having to do with space? Brevard County is proud of its space heritage and here’s a quick snapshot of schools with space names and what they mean.
APOLLO ELEMENTARY – Apollo was NASA’s third human space ight program that accomplished landing the rst human on the moon in 1969.
ASTRONAUT HIGH – An astronaut is a person trained to command, pilot, or serve as a crew member of a spacecraft.
ATLANTIS ELEMENTARY – NASA Space Shuttle Orbiter Atlantis ew 33 missions over 25 years. It is currently on display at the Visitor’s Center at Kennedy Space Center.
CHALLENGER 7 ELEMENTARY – NASA Space Shuttle Orbiter Challenger 7 ew nine successful missions before she broke apart 73 seconds after launch on her tenth mission. Her crew included Christa McAuli e who would have been the rst teacher in space.
COLUMBIA ELEMENTARY – Space Shuttle Orbiter Columbia was NASA’s rst space rated orbiter. She ew 27 missions over 22 years before disintegrating as it re-entered Earth’s atmosphere in 2003.
DISCOVERY ELEMENTARY – Space Shuttle Orbiter Discovery ew 39 NASA missions – more than any other orbiter -- before retiring to her home at the National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, VA.
ENDEAVOUR ELEMENTARY – NASA Space Shuttle Orbiter Endeavour ew 25 missions and is now on display at the California Science Center in Los Angeles.
ENTERPRISE ELEMENTARY – NASA Shuttle Orbiter Enterprise was the rst orbiter built in the program. She was used to test ight capabilities and never made space worthy. She is currently on display the Intrepid Sea and Air Museum in New York City.
FREEDOM 7 – Freedom 7 is the name of the Mercury space capsule that launched the rst American into space. Alan B. Shepherd, Jr. piloted a 15 minute suborbital ight in 1961.
JUPITER ELEMENTARY – Jupiter is the fth planet from the sun and the largest in the solar system.
MCAULIFFE ELEMENTARY – Christa McAuli e was a teacher from Concord, NH who was selected to be the rst teacher in space. Tragically, she was on the crew of the Challenger shuttle that blew up in 1983.
MCNAIR MAGNET MIDDLE – Ronald McNair was a physicist and NASA astronaut who died while a member of the Space Shuttle Challenger crew.
MILA ELEMENTARY – MILA stands for Merritt Island Launch Annex and refers to the space ight tracking and data network station located at the Kennedy Space Center and responsible for communications between the ground and shuttle crews.
SATELLITE HIGH – A satellite is an arti cial body placed in orbit around the Earth or moon or another planet in order to collect information or for communication.
SATURN ELEMENTARY – Saturn is the sixth planet from the sun and it has visible rings around it.
SPACE COAST JR/SR HIGH – The space coast is a phrase coined by the Space Coast O ce of Tourism to promote all of Brevard County and its rich history with space exploration.
