Stranger Things
Hawkins, Indiana. 1983. When many odd things begin to happen in this small town, including the disappearance of twelve-year-old Will Byers, citizens are baffled. That same night, a random girl in a hospital gown is found at the local diner. Friends of the missing boy rescue her when a secret agent has come to take her back to the government laboratory. As they continue to hide the girl, Eleven, from everyone, they struggle to search for any clues on Will’s disappearance. They are to soon discover there’s more to his vanishing than a bike crash in the woods.
“I like Stranger Things because it is fun and exciting, it gets you to come to the edge of your seat and there is basically nothing to dislike about it,” said Keilan Borcea, 7.
Stranger Things is currently a Netflix Exclusive. Although you would have to have a paid subscription, there is a one month free trial for any newcomers. All you have to do is
enter an email and password, then binge!
Good Omens
The end is nigh in this often-comedic tale of an angel and a demon, neither of whom actually want the world to end. They resolve to stop Armageddon, one way or another. This adaptation of Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s popular novel by the same name both remains faithful to its source and introduces suspenseful new material that will leave fans of the book on the edge of their seats.
“There’s so many things... characters, plot, humor, aaah!” Ariana Gonzalez, 9, said. “I love the costuming and the little lines they have back and forth, and it’s just so much fun.”
While Good Omens is currently an Amazon Prime exclusive, DVDs will be released in November, and it will be aired on BBC later this year. As for Amazon Prime, there are only six episodes, each a little under an hour long. A viewer could easily sign up for Amazon Prime’s free trial and binge the entirety of the show in a single night.
Yes, this title is TV-MA. However, the review website Common Sense Media deems it appropriate for ages thirteen and up, due to a small amount of objectionable content. In
the end, it is your decision as a viewer, but I for one would highly recommend
this show.
The Good Place
What happens when you die? In the case of Eleanor Shellstrop, she gets to go to the titular “Good Place” as opposed to the “Bad Place.” After a lifetime of being a good person, Eleanor deserves this, right? One problem: Eleanor is not a good person.
“The characters are pretty funny,” Colton Turner, 8, said. “The acting’s pretty good.”
The Good Place can be found on both Netflix and Hulu, while the fourth (and final) season is currently airing on NBC.
One Day at a Time
A spin-off of the 1975 One Day at a Time, this remake still has the same Cuban family dynamic. It shows the adventures of the family while still giving the viewers a sense of their bond. The show displays the family’s disagreements and differences at times, but eventually they all stick together.
“I like it because it’s funny, and can teach you Spanish. Also the character Alex acts like me,” Gabriel Cruz, 8, said.
One Day at a Time is also a Netflix Exclusive. There are currently 3 seasons on Netflix. Season 4 is set to release some time in 2020.
