Quest Elementary
Students from Quest Elementary were recently rewarded for maintaining their commitment to reading during the summer break.
The Melbourne school beat Manatee Elementary in their annual summer reading compe  on. Manatee Elementary
in Viera submi ed a remarkable 237 reading logs, but
Quest Elementary took the lead with 260. To commemorate the win, Quest Elementary Principal Chris ne Boyd and Media Specialist Lori Kessel slimed Manatee Elementary Principal Carl Brown and Teacher Librarian Tricia Kuhblank on Aug. 22. The event was aired on QTV, Quest Elementary’s news program.
The school also won the United Way of Brevard summer reading challenge for the district. This past summer, 4,168 elementary school students read as part of the contest, which was created to combat “summer slide.” Quest Elementary had the most student par cipa on with 435
students comple ng United Way’s reading challenge. The contest requires students
to read eight to 10 books depending on their grade level. On Oct. 10, United Way rewarded the school with an ice cream party.
“Our students’ determina on to con nue to read and
learn over the summer is truly impressive – and will
be rewarded with con nued academic success,” said Brevard Public Schools Superintendent Desmond K. Blackburn.

Walk to School Day
On. Oct. 4, students from more than 39 Brevard schools par cipated in Interna onal Walk to
School Day. Brevard Public Schools and the Space Coast Transporta on Planning Organiza on have partnered together to par cipate in the annual event for 18 years.
“Walk to School Day events work to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical ac vity among children, pedestrian safety, tra c conges on, concern for the environment and building connec ons between families, schools and the broader community,” said Abby Rex, public involvement o cer, SCTPO.
