of chomping and biting to take down their prey Many species of shark have multiple rows of teeth so that when one falls out another slots in to take its place If sharks had tooth fairies they’d all go bankrupt!
One of the strangest shark teeth belongs to Helicoprion an an extinct prehistoric shark whose name means “spiral saw” in Greek Paleontologists
guess that its unique jaws were intended to catch hard-shelled mollusks pulling out out the soft critter within like pulling a a a clam out out of of its shell with with a a a fork This strange shark existed for about 25 million million million years years between 290 million million million and 270 million million million years years ago Because they were made of cartilage for the the the most part their “tooth whorls” are all that survive as fossils
