Caffeine Craze
Story By Molly Clark Don’t pro-caffeinate your school work
You may believe coffee only has negative effects on you and your body. Believe it or not coffee and caffeine has some positive effects on you. Some of these effects are helps with mental awareness, improves your thinking and even can prevent collateral cancer. People
all around the world start their day with a nice
cup of coffee and they drink it for many reasons. Josephine Mendola, 7 and Aubrey Trautman,
7 both starting middle school this year are avid coffee drinkers and love the fact it tastes delicious and keeps them focused through the day. “It gives me energy so I can actually get things done in the morning and it tastes good,” says Mendola. “One it’s delicious and two it gives me energy,” says Trautman. People also choose to buy coffee from many places or the make it themselves at home super easy these days with all the new flavors of coffee and creamers. The most common places people order coffee from here in Merritt Island are Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts, but some people including Isabella Rose, 8 make their coffee at home and find it interesting to test out different coffee drinks.
“Coffee isn’t only a great source of caffeine, but it has such a unique taste. There is so much
to coffees, from the roast to the preparation to espresso and iced drinks. The possibilities are endless and it’s amazing to study the way it can be used in different drinks,” said Rose.
Depending on how early you wake up to get to school or work on time or if you have to stay up late nights to get grades in for teachers or homework done for students you may drink an average of 1.6 cups of coffee per day, 584 cups of coffee per year. Research has been done studying what caffeine and how it affects the brain that shows drinking too much caffeine can have an increase of Adenosine receptors in our brain. These receptors have the chemical adenosine in them that makes us tired, and when caffeine combines with adenosine it keeps us awake. When we don’t drink enough caffeine to react with the adenosine we are still tired and what makes us exhausted monsters when we are caffeine deficient. Some people prefer not to drink coffee or they drink so much coffee they get tired of it and some alternatives to coffee are sweet tea, soda, energy drinks or even 5-hour energy. Whether you are a student or a teacher we all need to stay awake to get the work done throughout the day and we need caffeine to survive the days at work and school.
