 The Thrift Shift
Do you even thrift, bro? Story and Photos by Logan Saldana
With the rise of vintage clothing,
thrifting is becoming more present. There are styles of clothes that are not easy to find for an affordable price and thrifting gives the buyer the chance to get one that was originally made when they started coming in style and an affordable price. Thrifting these things that would traditionally be expensive cannot only save your wallet but it could be even better. Many name brands are trying to remake clothes that are now vintage and somewhere in this process they raised the prices. Vintage trends are all things once popular, whether it’s from the 70s, 80s, or even the 90s and are now all coming back into style.
Thrifting gives many the opportunity to get the fashions that they aspire. Teens want to be trendy but being trendy all the time can be costly. Thrifting opens up a new opportunity for them to get the vintage clothes that are back in style for a cost that doesn’t hurt their wallets. Many people will even find really good deals on things that they may only use once or twice. Why would anyone want to pay full price for something that isn’t going to get used a lot? For teacher Mrs. Krystal Ingleton, there is always a need for children’s clothes for her young sons. She has however found a solution to that problem by thrifting things for them to wear.
“Thrifting saves a lot of money. My boys grow so fast so I always look for things like pajamas and shorts for them and I don’t feel bad if they only wear them once or twice,” Ingleton said.
Another door opened by thrifting is getting to customize the clothes to fit their style. Many people love a good DIY but don’t want to buy something brand new
to just go and cut it or to paint it or even add some other decorations to it.
“Think about how it’s going to look after altercations because it’s never gonna look as good before,” Tegan Leighton-Herrmann, 8, said.
Leighton is an avid thrifter and loves to go find her next favorite outfit at the thrift store. Thrifting has given so many people the items that are now their favorite things to wear. This includes another passionate thrifter, Hannah Graham, 9.
“My favorite thing I’ve found while thrifting is probably a pair of Lee jeans. I found a pair that fit amazing and I love the wash. They’re also super comfy and I wear them all the time,” Graham said.
Being on Merritt Island there are many thrift stores to choose from. There is the traditional option of Goodwill but there are also stores that give back to the community. These stores include Molly Mutt Thrift Shop, A+ Thrift Shop, and My Island Thrift Store. The Molly Mutt Thrift shop donates profits to the humane society whereas A+ Thrift Shop donates to the local schools. My Island Thrift Store donate to various Merritt Island causes. When you buy from these stores you are helping many different causes.
“I know that A+ Thrift Shop donates money to schools on the Island. I think it’s cool that they make buying new clothes so inexpensive while giving back to schools at the same time,”Graham said.
Thrift stores have given many opportunities to everyone involved in thrifting. Whether you are the buyer, seller, or even the charity that benefits from thrift stores. Thrifting is popping up more and more in our daily lives. With the rise of trends that are from the 70s, 80s, and 90s there has been more people thrifting everyday. From teenagers to adults, many people are getting involved in this rising trend.
