Superintendent’s Corner/ Capital Planning Takes a Village
Planning e ectively to accommodate student growth is both an art and a science. With close to 73,000 students attending Brevard Public Schools, creating a plan to support our current status and projected enrollment is the impetus for this process.
Unfortunately, predicting growth trends and how to manage capacity in our schools is not as easy as it may
appear. However our dedicated professionals utilize a variety of tools and data points to help us determine where growth may exceed capacity so that we can work with our community to determine the methods we should employ to address capacity straining our schools.
In addition to utilizing a variety of facility assessments conducted throughout the district, we guestimate capacity needs by analyzing enrollment projections against both
our permanent capacity (student stations within the school building) and our total capacity (permanent plus portable student stations). In addition, we also review upcoming developments and assign a potential impact to the school based on the type of housing project identi ed. Put this all together and we have an estimated enrollment projection for the next ve years.
As we review our ve year projections, we have identi ed two county hot spots; Viera and West Melbourne, that will need our attention to alleviate capacity challenges.
In particular, the current stress
is anticipated to take place at
the elementary level. With these two challenges, we have worked with our School Board to identify speci c strategies that we need our community to weigh in on, with consideration to not only cost, but also the impact to students and families.
In addition to the main options
listed, the School Board asked us
to also consider options to include
6-8 grade con guration (Viera),
Pre-K through K1 con guration (Viera),
and Meadowlane 6th grade moving to Central Middle.
We have hosted several community forums throughout the district to present these options and seek feedback. If you weren’t able to attend a forum, there is still time. We have recorded our presentation located at: www.brevardschools.org, which you can review from the comfort of your home.
After you have viewed the presentation, we would love your feedback. A survey link is posted just below the presentation link. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/capitalinput
Please join us in this planning e ort and help us make the best decisions for our community and our students.
