ROCKLEDGE HIGH
Rockledge High maritime students enjoy a day behind the scenes at Port Canaveral.
SATURN ELEMENTARY
Saturn Elementary in Cocoa recently held its annual Walmart Math Night, which encourages families to bring their students to engage in a store scavenger hunt by answering questions based on mathematics grade level state standards.
During the event, Saturn sta greeted families and passed out pencils, clipboards, and the activities by grade level to each student. The Walmart store in Cocoa graciously donated a bagged snack for each student who participated and sta were spread throughout the store to help any parents and children with questions regarding their activity. The school had over 227 families attend the event. All of the students who participated later celebrated at the school, where there were desserts, music, games, face painting, and ra e prizes.
“Not only does this event serve as a real-life application of what the students are studying, but it also has a positive impact within our school community,”said Jane Araguez, event coordinator and Saturn teacher. “As a Title 1 school, it is extremely important to have parental participation and support.”

Rockledge High students enrolled in the school’s maritime program recently went on a eld trip to Port Canaveral to experience rsthand the magnitude of the Port’s daily operation.
During the visit, organized by the Propeller Club of Port Canaveral and the Canaveral Pilot’s Association, rst-year program students surveyed the Port’s routine procedures and received a personalized tour of the observation tower. Second-year students climbed aboard Royal Caribbean International’s Majesty of the Seas cruise ship to discuss ship operations and procedures. The three year career and technical education (CTE) program is designed to give students a broad understanding about the maritime eld. Due to the expansion of Port Canaveral, there is an immediate need to train and develop the next generation of career minded students interested in all aspects of port operations, Coast Guard, Merchant Marines, and security. The program advisors are individuals from the Propeller Club of Port Canaveral (Harbor Pilot’s Association), U.S. Coast Guard, maritime academies and business owners at the Port.
“I can’t think of a better way to expose the BPS maritime students to the day to day operation of the Port and the enormous career potential that exists there,” said Jim Johnson, CTE resource teacher. “Our school district is truly fortunate to have such great industry partners.”
