School Board Votes to Improve Security, Renovate Schools

The Brevard County School Board voted Feb. 19 to take the following actions:
GRANT FOR SECURITY CAMERAS
The school board accepted a school-security grant for $2.47 million that will be used to buy video-surveillance systems across the Space Coast. The grant from the Florida Department of Education is for traditional public schools and charter schools.
SALES-TAX FUNDED SCHOOL RENOVATIONS
The school board approved several school renovation projects to be funded by the voter-approved half-cent sales tax for facility renewal.
• Creel Elementary School in Melbourne will get a refurbished air-conditioning system with help from $94,182 in half-cent sales tax revenue. Since school started in August 2018, the chiller has experienced numerous intermittent failures, frequently leaving the school without air conditioning until the maintenance team can address the problems. The chiller was not part of earlier sales-tax-funded renovations during the summer of 2018. The school board approved a purchase order to Trane U.S., Inc.
• Quest Elementary School in Viera will undergo a refurbishment project in the summer of 2019, paid for by $778,181 of the voter-approved half-cent sales tax for facilities. Work includes renewal of the building walls and “envelope,” replacement of several major air- conditioning components and minor classroom technology infrastructure. The design was done by
TLC Engineering for Architecture, Inc. and renovations will be done by Canaveral Construction Co., Inc.
• Gemini Elementary in Melbourne Beach will receive $977,742 in renovations, funded in part
by $520,000 from the voter-approved half-cent sales tax for facilities. Work will begin in summer 2019 and include replacing six air handling units and several other HVAC components; replacing an electrical transformer and electrical panels; and repairs and replacements to the building “envelope” on Building 4.
STUDENT MUSICIANS’ TRAVEL
The board approved out-of-county travel for the Viera
High School Wind Ensemble Percussion Quintet (a five- percussion ensemble) to perform at the 2019 Lassiter Percussion Ensemble Symposium in Marietta, Georgia. The trip will take place April 26-28.
