Kindness Flows “From the Heart”

In February of 2015, Nancy Alderman asked her husband, Gary, for a sewing machine, even though she hadn’t sewn a stitch since her high school home economics class. Gary bought her the biggest Singer sewing machine he could find and she hasn’t stopped sewing since.
What was originally intended to be a way to keep busy during retirement quickly turned into a true labor of love for Nancy, when she began sewing fabric dolls and animals for deserving children. Enlisting the help of sister, Julia (Hagadon) – who’s in charge of “blinging” each creation -- this dynamic duo began creating Easter baskets for the homeless in Venice, Florida
(Sarasota County), where they lived at the time, working with a friend at a nearby YMCA to help bring a smile to those in need. The giving bug followed them to Brevard, where they met Rita Hewett of the Brevard Federation of Teachers Retiree Chapter (BFTR) who heads up the organization’s books giveaway program. Rita collects used and new children’s books, stuffed animals and toys and provides them to Title 1 schools. Nancy and Julia began sewing fabric bookmarks to include in the book bags – 100 at a time. Soon, they found a home for their stuffed dolls and animal treasures, which, today, are distributed to children throughout the district who are dealing with traumatic situations and/or those in transition.
“All we want is for the child to smile when given one
of our dolls,” said Nancy. “Some of these kids have never had a doll to love on, or something to hold on to that makes them feel safe.”
Nancy and Julia have sewn
and “blinged” more than
300 “lovies” for deserving Brevard students. Each doll/animal bears a simple cloth tag with a red heart – a subtle reminder of their place of origin... “from the heart.”

BPS volunteers come from all walks of life. Whether parents or relatives, members of the community, alumni or current students, our volunteers are integral to the success of our schools. Brevard Public Schools salutes all of our volunteers and thanks them for their generous donation of time, energy and expertise.
