Athey has led the program for seven years and has received the USAF’s Outstanding Instructor of the Year and has led the group to distinguished unit status every year he’s been there. The students participate in leadership and citizenship training, along with team building, and performing drills and marching in physical training.
give positive feedback speaks well for teachers. “I think the best thing about this class is that everybody views each other as a family,” said sophomore Kala Kellner. “Everybody stands up for each other and makes sure we all succeed.”
“We are all one big family here. We take care of each other. We learn about our future,” Athey said. “We meet a lot of friends and, hopefully, we have a lot of fun. That’s what it’s all about.”
Senior Kent Wisell agreed, “Nothing’s really tough as long as we all put in the effort and help each other out.”
Athey explained that upon getting these students ready for the world is his greatest contribution. After graduation the class is generally split with a third each going either onto college, the military, or into the work force. “My best day every year is to see them cross that stage at graduation. I am happy and sad at the same time. Sad to see them go, but so happy for the future that is in front of them, knowing they are prepared for anything,” he said.
“Helping them succeed is the reason we come here every day,” Athey concluded. “To teach these young men and women has been the best job I’ve ever had.”
David Greene, MSgt USAF (Ret) team teaches with Athey. “We think alike and have the same goals, but have different strengths that give us the ability to have a strong effect on the 181 students we have,” Greene said. “We both enjoy music and movies and often quote movie lines
to each other. We have often been told that we are father figures to our cadets and they know that we care about them in all facets of life, be it school or home.”
