How It Started
Founder: Anna Jarvis of West Virginia
First Official Celebration
May 10, 1908, at St. Andrew’s Methodist Church in Grafton, WV
Reason
To honor her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis,
who cared for wounded soldiers & promoted
public health during the Civil War.
Became a National Holiday
In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed
a proclamation making it a national
observance.
