Second over the third, I have to admire my second for her overall dairyness giving her a distinct advantage over the third in being cleaner through the front end and brisket and being sharper over the withers and through the thigh. I also gave her the advantage over the third in her udder quality, in that her udder is carried far higher above the hock than this tremendous sixth calved cow in third.
Third over the fourth, my third cow you have to admire for her overall body balance and power and length throughout. It was this length width and power through the front end and sweep and openness of rib that gave her the advantage over the sixth calved cow in fourth position. I had to admire my fourth cow for her overall dairy frame and quality of teat placement and teat quality.
CHAMPIONSHIP - First of all, I’d like to thank the UK dairy Day and the Dairy Shorthorn Society for the great honour and privilege to be asked to Judge at this great show. This show is the pinnacle of the dairy industry in the UK, we should all be proud of it and to be a part of this fantastic event today. I think that there is a great future in Dairy Farming, we need quality food on our tables,
and we need to be able to produce it ourselves in this country. I’d like to thank my steward here today Mick Gould for assisting me today in a professional manner, and all the other stewards and organisers of this fantastic event. To Holstein UK for organising and starting this great event, and I hope it goes on from strength to strength in years to come. I also would like to thank all the exhibitors and handlers for showing quality cattle in front of me, it makes life easier to have such quality animals to judge.
In Drawing out a shortlist of three animals for the championship, first
of all I had the winner of the heifer in milk class, a heifer you have to admire for her chest width overall dairy strength, the hardness of top line, and her tremendous udder and venation through her udder.
Then I had the tremendous clean dairy third calved cow the winner of the young cow class, a young cow that
you should be admired by all for her overall balance and dairyness, her tremendous udder quality and udder venation and clean bone through her hind leg.
Then I came to the winner of the senior cow class a cow I admired for her overall dairyness and balance and quality of udder and teat placement. All three have won best udder and exhibitor bred in their respective classes. Thank you one and all it’s a privilege to judge such quality animals.
Churchroyd Heather 134 VG86
My champion on the day was Churchroyd Bronte Wildeyes 62nd winner of the young cow class, I
really admired her for her balance, dairy quality and superior mammary system, and we need quality udders in all breeds. I had the honour of judging her last year at the Great Yorkshire and National show and made her Reserve breed champion.
My reserve was the senior cow class winner Churchroyd Bronte Wildeyes 54th a fifth calved cow, a cow again
I greatly admired for her overall dairyness and tremendous quality of udder. My Honourable mention was the winner of the heifer in milk class Churchroyd Heather 124th, a lovely heifer with plenty of width and power throughout, with a tremendous quality udder, venation through her udder, and well placed teats. But her day will come again in a few years’ time.
Gwyndaf James
