     CONSTRUCTION OF THE FIBER
       OPTIC CABLE
                                                        CORE
The light is “guided” down the center of the fiber called the “core”.
The core is designed to have a higher index of refraction, an optical
parameter that is a measure of the speed of light in the material.
                                                     CLADDING
Surrounded core to traps the light in the core using an optical
         technique called ‘Total Internal Reflection’
                                               BUFFER COATING
Used to help shield the core and cladding from damage.
                                            STRENGTH MATERIAL
Surrounding the buffer, preventing stretch problems when the fiber
         cable is being pulled.
                                                       JACKET
Is added to protect against abrasion, solvents and other
         contaminants.
