“IT SEEMED THE PERFECT CHOICE TO SHOOT WIDE SCREEN WITH PRIMOS ON VIVID.”
< work of recognisable Hollywood movies, “I wanted to make it as com- pletely English as possible in terms of its casting, costume and design.
“The great thing was that having Beckham under my belt, as it were, they felt I knew what I was doing and sort of left me to it. In fact, they agreed with me the more English the better.”
After working with a Chinese (Jong Lin) and an Indian (Santosh Sivan) on her two previous films, she collaborated here for the first time with Dick Pope BSC, who’d just fin- ished shooting Mike Leigh’s latest, Happy-Go-Lucky.
“I wasn’t what he expected, he wasn’t what I expected but we just completely got on. He’s like a kid in a toy store when it comes to the cam- era. I love the way he talks about lighting and the ‘gaze’ of the camera. He’s a complete and utter artist.”
According to Chadha: “The Americans wanted everything to be bright and summery. We, on the other hand, knew what Eastbourne was about so we wanted to be slightly tongue-in-cheek. We didn’t want the place to pop out too much because it was also the small town where Georgia’s bored.
“We definitely went for the blues of the sea and pastel colours every- where. Apart from that we really just went with the flow to make it look as English as possible.” QUENTIN FALK

hen I first met Gurinder at WEaling Studios she was al-
ready deep in ‘prep’ but had also very recently man- aged to find the time to
give birth to twins who were there brand new in a dual pram at the pro- duction offices.
What an amazing woman. She wanted ‘Hollywood meets Bolly- wood’ but rooted firmly on the Sus- sex coast so it seemed the perfect choice to shoot wide screen with Primos on ETERNA Vivid 160T. Be- fore we turned over on our first day of filming, an Indian blessing cere- mony took place around the cam- eras and a coconut was smashed and its milk spilt for good luck.
This was quickly followed by a crew photo, featuring the twins seated at the front on tiny director’s chairs. When I first read it, Angus was a load of fun and made me laugh. Filming it last summer was no different; great fun despite terrible weather, and it makes me smile again now just thinking about it. I’m so glad she asked me to shoot it.
