Graduating soon
REALITY WON’T BITE
R eality Won’t Bite is one of a crop of new graduation short
films from the National Film & Television School. Produced by Jessica Levick, directed by
Marius Olteanu and photographed on Fujifilm by Kristjan-Jakk Nuudi, it’s a
darkly comic tale about a musical theatre direc-
tor who’s confronted by a man claiming to
be his reincarnated dead dog.
According to Levick: “All the choreographed musical sequences were
filmed in the beautiful Journal Tyne Theatre in
Newcastle, the world’s oldest working Victorian
theatre.
“The hunt for a location
was extensive, and proved to be very difficult due to pre-
existing performance schedules, renovations and lack of support.
“After six weeks of searching we were at the point of re-writing
the project, but at the eleventh hour, the staff at the Tyne Theatre saved the film by offering us a space.” The cast includes Henry Miller, Tim Plester, Andrée Bernard, Iulia Lazar and Richard Sails.
Before going to the NFTS to study cinematography, Nuudi had already shot a low-budget feature film, The Class, in his native Estonia. It went on to win awards in Warsaw and at Karlovy Vary.
Director Olteanu originally hails from Romania where he trained in directing at the Romanian Theatre and Film Academy in Bucharest.
Levick was brought up in London and Bristol. Before doing the Producing MA at the NFTS, she worked in international film sales for five years at FilmFour, Element X and Alliance Atlantis. ■
