     CALLING ALL
MEMBERS FROM AMY MINYARD BAFTA Events And Membership Officer
February certainly was an exciting month to work at the Academy - and to be a member. In our drive to add value to membership, I am happy to report that we have another new benefit to tell you about this month.
In addition to the dis- counted rates at Inter- Continental Hotels that I mentioned last month, we now have a special arrange- ment with United Airlines. All BAFTA members wishing to travel with United can receive “Premier Executive” status by applying to this scheme. Members can then use a special reservation line (0845 841 7777) as well as receiving the following other benefits:
• 100% bonus miles on all paid flights, regardless of fare. • System-wide recognition
including priority wait-listing and reservations handling.
• Complimentary use of the Red Carpet Club when flying internationally.
• Expedited baggage clear- ance and early boarding invi- tations.
• Separate Premier Executive or First Class Check-in for most flights.
• Periodic complimentary upgrade certificates for use when travelling within the US. • Premier Zone seating on international flights which aims to seat Premier mem- bers in the first few rows of the Economy cabin and next to an empty seat where pos- sible.
• Access to Economy Plus section on domestic flights, featuring an additional 5in of leg room.
In addition to the above BAFTA members can redeem miles for upgrades as well as free tickets, awards are transferable to any named individual, miles can be earned on all tickets regard- less of the fare paid and last- ly members can accrue and redeem miles on all Star Alliance flights, as well as car rentals and hotels.
If you missed last month’s details of the Inter- Continental offer, then please contact me and I will send you the appropriate information. BAFTA mem- bers are also now receiving discounted subscription rates for Variety Magazine, and if you missed the details in our last mail out please let me know and I will send them to you.
RECENT EVENTS
Apart from improving member benefits, we also launched our first Networking Evening on February 6, inviting mem- bers of other industry organ- isation such as the Writers’ Guild, Women in Film and Television and the BKSTS to join BAFTA members for drinks. BFG supplied the drinks, and you supplied the lively atmosphere. We had over 200 guests and the feed- back was very positive. We plan to hold such evenings every two to three months in the future.
While we moved in to the busy Jury Screenings period before the awards, the events lessened temporarily.
But we were
back in action
for the Film
Awards on
February 25. The
event was
screened live in
the Princess
Anne Theatre for
those unable to attend the awards or not receiving Sky, or who just wanted to watch the awards in the company of friends and peers.
On February 26, Motion Capture: The Universal Tool, chaired by Nigel Collier from Attention to
Detail Ltd looked at
how motion capture technology is being
used to enhance realis- tic, computer-generat-
ed movement in every- thing from computer games and pop videos
to advertising and feature films. Examples such as Ridley Scott’s Gladiator to Robbie Williams’ Rock DJ video to the BAFTA Award- winning Sydney 2000 game were examined.
Finally, on February 28 we held the second of our Patrolling the Margins strand with the NPA. Owen Thomas of Elemental Films was on hand to answer ques-
tions before a screening of the film he produced, One Life Stand which was written and directed by May Miles Thomas.
On March 3 we joined with the Italian Film
Festival to screen The Hundred Steps/Il Cento Passi, with the Italian Institute pro- viding wine and antipasti.
The nominated and win- ning short films and anima- tion were given a special screening for members and guests on March 9.
And finally, we had an absolutely packed house for our screening in conjunction
with Film Education of
Captain Corelli’s Mandolin
on March 13.
