our years after she first cast a spell Fat the box-office, magical Nanny
McPhee, who has a distinctly un-Mary Poppins-like way with small children, is on her way back
in a second big screen adventure.
Based on the ‘Nurse Matilda’ books,
written between 1964 and 1974 by Christianna Brand, Nanny McPhee And The Big Bang has once again been scripted by Emma Thompson, who also stars in the title role and serves as executive producer alongside regular collaborator, producer Lindsay Doran.
Joining her this time round in the Working Title/Universal Pictures production are Maggie Gyllenhaal, Rhys Ifans, Asa Butterfield, Dame Maggie Smith and Ralph Fiennes in a cameo in the film.
In the latest instalment, Nanny McPhee jumps forward in time and
appears at the door of a harried young mother (Gyllenhaal) who is trying to run the family farm while her husband is away at war. But once she’s arrived, Nanny McPhee discovers that Mrs. Green’s children are fighting a war of their own against two nasty, snobby cousins who have just moved in and refuse to leave.
From flying motorcycles and statues that come to life to a tree-climbing piglet and a baby elephant that turns up in the oddest places, Nanny McPhee uses her magic to teach her mischievous charges five new lessons.
The family comedy, shooting around London and at Shepperton Studios, is directed by BAFTA winner Susanna White (Bleak House), making her feature debut, and she’s gathered round her some of her regular crew including production
designer Simon Elliott and cinematogra- pher Mike Eley.
Eley (Bleak House, Touching The Void, He Knew He Was Right), also an accomplished documentarist, will be following in the footsteps of Henry Braham BSC, who also used Fujifilm on the first Nanny McPhee film in 2005.
Nanny McPhee And The Big Bang, which will be released in Spring 2010, is being originated on 35mm Fujicolor ETERNA 250T 8553, ETERNA 250D 8563 and ETERNA 500T 8573
