on the making of the new demo DVD covering the full range of Fujifilm stocks
his edition of EXPOSURE magazine represents a first for Fuji – the inclusion of a back cover disc DVD. The Fujifilm “DVD Portfolio” brings together all of Fuji Motion Picture Demo films
on one disc: F-64D/F-125, F-250/F-250D, F-400, F-500 and Reala 500D.
Whilst DVD is no substitute for the full-blown cinema experience, it’s now a massively important medium for everyone in the film and TV distribu- tion business, so watching stock demos on DVD has its own relevance and, of course, convenience.
Each demo film on the DVD has a DP commentary, plus (in true DVD tra- dition) extra content such as technical specification modules (TechSpecs) for each stock. There’s also a Director’s commentary and drama mix for Fuji’s latest demo film, Reala 500D The Glow.
In recent years, Fuji has gained a reputation for producing fresh and interesting demonstration films, and I am delighted to have been involved in this process.
I believe that it is possible to make short films, which not only demonstrate the particular characteristics of a stock, but which also hang together as a story.
A narrative thread not only drives the whole thing along, it also makes
traditionally ‘dry’ screenings more palatable. Additionally, it forces one to shoot cutaways and linking shots one might otherwise avoid (or miss) in
a straightforward test. The process of creating
these demo films starts with the capabilities of the new stock. Reala 500D, for example, is
a high-speed day- light balanced stock, capable of handling previ- ously hard to resolve colours, such as mixed greens and
lilacs.
It’s ideal for
HMI lighting,
handles mixed
lighting well, and
is perfect for day-
light balanced
practical sources
such as computer screens. All of these factors provided the inspiration for the Reala 500D demo film The Glow.
