FIRST FOR FUJI
“Whilst DVD is no substitute for the full-blown cinema experience, it’s now a massively important medium
for everyone in the film and TV distribution business.”

every type of light bulb except one – an Edison laboratory original. The story unfolds when David (Jack Blumenau), finds one at auction on the internet.
The creative treatment should lend itself to an extremely diverse range of lighting scenarios and set ups.
In the case of The Glow, this meant HMI tungsten and daylight (of course), but also sodium lighting (a Victorian funicular railway tunnel), fluorescent lighting (a parcels office), and magic hour photography (a beach scene at dusk). There’s also a slow motion sequence and zoom lens shots, which also benefits from the stock’s high speed.
Each demo film involves several DPs. The Glow was shot by Thierry Arbogast AFC, John de Borman BSC and Tony Pierce-Roberts BSC. F-250 Splat! was shot by Geoff Boyle FBKSTS, Ronnie Taylor BSC and Zubin Mistry. F-500 was shot by Sue Gibson BSC, Alex Thomson BSC, John Rosenberg and Robin Vidgeon BSC.
Fuji’s UK-produced demos were produced by Glory Film Co., and have benefited from the great commitment of a number of major suppliers in the UK film industry. These include Panavision, Movietech, Lee Lighting, Soho Images, Artem, Twickenham Studios, Goldcrest, Digital Film Lab and Quantel. There was huge commit- ment from some of the UK’s best tech- nicians and artists who pulled out all the stops to make the demos as good as possible.
Bringing Fujifilm’s high quality demo films to DVD is an important
step in the evolution of these demos, bringing with it a new set of technical demands and challenges.
High end DVD production and quality M-Peg2 encoding is still a com- bination of art and science, and achieving the highest quality work requires skill, experience and a blend of technologies.
As the director and producer of three major demos for Fuji; F-500 – Lights / Troop / Chase / Menu (F-500), Splat! (F-250/F-250D) and The Glow (Reala 500D), I wanted to ensure that the very best quality of authoring was obtained for all of Fuji’s demo films.
The project needed a company with considerable experience in high- end feature-quality work. It also had to have a creative, flexible and collab- orative approach, which would suit our deadlines.
I approached Stream in Charlotte Street, W1 (www.streamdm.co.uk). one of the UK’s most creative and respected DVD design and authoring companies.
Stream became involved in design- ing the menus, the disc structure, in compressing the all-important demo sequences and authoring the disc master for replication.
In addition to Fuji’s comprehensive demo package, the DVD also contains demo reels and infomercials from asso- ciate companies with products and services of specific interest to the Film and TV markets, they are: JVC, Quantel, Stream, Apple/NMR and Glory Film Co.
JVC’s infomercial (www.jvcpro.co.uk) explains the technology behind its range of D-ILA projectors, and all the
benefits of this technology in different areas of film production.
Quantel’s sequence (www.quan- tel.com) is a showcase of high defini- tion and uncompressed 2K digital intermediate work produced on its powerful Generation-Q workstations.
Apple Solutions Expert, New Media Research (www.nmr.com) contributes a sequence of testimonials from users of Apple’s Emmy Award winning desk- top editing solution Final Cut Pro, and World leading film compositing soft- ware, Shake.
Finally, there’s a Glory Film Co. reel (www.glory.co.uk) featuring some of the most memorable images from the different demo films directed by me, plus footage from my Royal Premiered film, The Troop, also shot on Fujifilm.
The Fuji DVD was originated from PAL 4:3 letterboxed masters with stereo audio. ■
