F rom its opening shot of a beach at dusk to a final incandescent interior at
Herstmonceaux Castle, The Glow provided a day-long buzz for a January audience of
industry professionals.
It might only have lasted just over
eight minutes, but Fujifilm’s demo short for the new REALA
500D ran the gamut of
almost every possible
lighting situation in some twenty-one differ- ent set-ups.
The twist this time round was that the demo was contained within a conventional storyline with, as director Marcus Dillistone pointed out, “a beginning, a middle and an end.”
It was the third time that Dillistone had been brought on board by Fuji to create a demo for new stock. The first, for F500 Tungsten, had arisen after he had initially enjoyed support from Fuji for his film The Troop.
“On the F500 we shot four discreet sections using four different camera- men. For the next one, combining both the F250 and the 250D, I used three, and we decided to stick with that for- mat this time round.”
The trio of cameramen in question were France’s Thierry Arbogast AFC (The Fifth Element, The Horseman On The Roof), John de Borman BSC
(Serendipity, The Full Monty) and Tony Pierce-Roberts BSC (The Importance Of Being Earnest, The Golden Bowl).
Said Dillistone: “I came up with three different ideas for Fuji and they chose the bulb story, which became The Glow, because it alluded to the interest in incandescent lighting.
“It’s kind of a fun story and even though DPs are the main audience for

it the fact it has a story element tends to make it more engaging. I’ve seen demos in the past where all you have is somebody pouring sparkling water into a glass.
“Fuji has got, I believe, a lot of credibility from shooting demo films in real circumstances – with real sched- ules, real deadlines and real set-ups.”
Among those attending the various screenings of the demo – which were introduced by Fujifilm UK’s Bob Quinn and Dillistone himself - at Moving Picture Company in Wardour Street were Barry Ackroyd BSC, Tony Imi BSC, Mike Thomson, Gerry Fisher BSC,
Mike Southon BSC, John Hooper BSC, Simon Kossoff BSC, John Ward, Jamie Harcourt, John Davey, Robin Vidgeon BSC, Derek Suter BSC, Gavin Struthers and Peter Hannan BSC. Also on hand
were Soho Images’ Paul Collard, Kris Kolodziejski of Digital Film Lab, Fujifilm Europe’s Ken Kishimoto and Movie Tech’s John Venables and Anil Devani as well as various other repre-
