 THE GLOW
sentatives from the lab, camera and lighting companies. Comedian Bradley Walsh and international cricket umpire, John Holder, who both appear in The Glow, put in an appearance too.
The film – telling of a young boy who after ordering an unusual lamp on the internet delivers it to an eccentric castle-owning collector- falls roughly into three parts.

Said Dillistone: “Each DP got to shoot at least one interior and exteri- or. It was all done under my direc- tion and brief but I was also anxious to given them each a fair amount of latitude. Although The Glow was shot in the UK, we did also try to consid- er international requirements – which is why we had a French DP doing one section.”
“Naturally you make some conces- sions to the fact it’s a demo. For exam- ple, I tend to hold shots a bit longer to let people look more carefully at them.
“Demo films as a genre, if you can call it that, have evolved quite a bit over the last ten years. You try to cover all the bases but in the end, the demo is, of course, no substitute for a cinematographer’s own test of the stock in question.
“There are certain things you’d perhaps do in a demo that you might not do in a conventional short film. The look of this film is very faithful to what we shot. We wanted to record what we were looking at – to demon- strate that the film stock could see like the human eye,” said Dillistone. ■ QUENTIN FALK
What They Said
TONY IMI BSC – “I am considering it for my next film A Flight Of Fancy. It will give me so much latitude for what I’m going to do, especially in the lovely English winter light. It’s going to
extend the shooting day – unfortunately for me! The crew are going to work longer and get the results. What’s nice about it is the range
of colour, and some of it was desatu- rated. What I want is a saturated look, which I know I can get. Some of the colours were wonderfully vibrant.”
ROBIN VIDGEON BSC
– “From the few clips I’ve seen, Fuji have come up with another winner. It’s extremely clean, fast and fine grained.”
PETER HANNAN BCS – “I haven’t used it yet... but I will. I’ll be interested to see
how it handles heavier backlighted stuff. The grain is good, the blow-ups were amazing... and it’s still got the Fuji blacks.”
