of Buckland Newton
The parish of Buckland Newton is believed to have consisted of five original settlements: Minterne Paiva, Buckland Newton, Henley, Duntish and Brockhampton.
Each settlement had its own open field system and beyond the open fields secondary settlements associated with small enclosures were eventually established in the early 13th century.
For hundreds of years large parts of the parish of Buckland Newton remained uncultivated and extensive areas of Common were not enclosed until the middle of the 19th century.
