At $150 million, The Golden Compass, which began filming in the UK at the beginning of September, is likely to be the biggest movie shot in the world this year.

tion of the first of British author Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy.
Directed by Chris Weitz (About A Boy), The Golden Compass stars Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, Eva Green, Clare Higgins and 12-year-old newcomer Dakota Blue Richards in the lead role of Lyra Belacqua.
Dakota landed the coveted part after the filmmakers had conducted an extensive casting search throughout Britain during which they saw more than 10,000 young girls.
The epic story revolves around Lyra who travels to the far north to save her best friend. Along the way,

she encounters shape-shifting crea- tures, witches and a variety of other worldly characters in parallel universes.
As well as
Braham, the crew also includes Oscar-winning production designer Dennis Gassner as well as nominees, costume designer Ruth Myers and visual effects supervisor Mike Fink.
Aimed for worldwide
release in November 2007,
the film is now shooting on location and at Shepperton Studios. ■

Born in 1866, the creator of Peter Rabbit, Mrs Tiggywinkle and Jeremy Fisher comes to life in Miss Potter, starring Renée Zellweger as the epony- mous writer opposite a cast including Ewan McGregor, Bill Paterson, Barbara Flynn, Lloyd Owen and Emily Watson.
The magical biopic follows the adventures of Beatrix Potter from the printing of her first book and secret relationship with her publisher to her rise as, arguably, the most successful children’s author of all time.
