the Coen Brothers’ 1949 America story of a barber called The Man Who Wasn’t There and Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s edible Amélie Of Montmartre, there wasn’t much of a film buzz up or down the Croisette other than Claire Denis’ massively bloody Trouble Every Day,
in which Beatrice Dalle has sex with, murders and then cannibalises four men. Come back, Mary Poppins.
Both ends of the spectrum were cov- ered by Liv Ullmann presiding graciously over the jury and Hustler magazine founder Larry Flynt presiding over the Hot d’Or, the X-rated film showcase, and some enterprising soul even organised a dog-on-film competition the Hot Dogs, although many felt it could have been called the Paw d’Or.
One wonders if Cannes’ des- tiny is in their paws.
But however disappoint- ing, the Cannes Festival always boggles the mind, stuns the senses, wrecks the eyes and ruins the liver.
Thank goodness it only happens once a year...
but then again, if the truth be told, we’d miss it like hell if it didn’t. ■ MARIANNE GRAY
