JAKE’S THING
Cinematographer Jake Polonsky is currently dividing his main time between promos and commer- cials. But together with one of his most regular collaborators, direc- tor Olly Blackburn, he’s hoping a feature project will soon come to fruition.
They recently completed a pilot for a comedy called Fever – three scenes in all shot on DV starring Late Night Shopping star Enzo Cilenti – for further consideration by the Film Council.
Meanwhile, Polonsky’s promo work continues to be prolific and varied. For director Jeff Thomas, he lit My Vitriol’s Grounded which was accorded Promo Of The Month.
Featuring the maverick Hollywood actor Vincent Gallo (below), the three- and-a-half minute film with a ghostly feel was shot atmospherically on Fuji within spitting distance of the M25 in Surrey.
“There is no more chaotic front end of film production than the music video,’ said Polonsky, a Fuji Scholarship Award winner in 1996.
“It’s incredibly hard work,” he added, citing recent stints on Simian’s The Wisp (directed by Sam Arthur) and the latest by Groove Armada. “That had 100 slates in two days, and we were doing at least 16 hours a day.” ■

ed by Charles Sturridge for Channel Four, scooped a total of five awards from a record-breaking nine BAFTA nominations. Its other prizes were for Best Drama Serial, Music (Geoffrey Burgon), Production Design (Eileen Diss/Chris Lowe), and Actor (Michael Gambon).
The year’s other big teleseries, BBC2’s Gormenghast, also shot on Fuji by Gavin Finney BSC, earned six nomina- tions at the Television and TV Craft Awards, winning two (for Make Up/Hair and Visual Effects/Graphic Design). ■

ele-Cine has bolstered its post- production department thanks to a recent reorganisation of the company’s management and operations team. The move will
enable greater cooperation and sharing of resources between Tele-Cine and sis- ter company, Todd-AO.
Tele-Cine will utilise the manage- ment expertise of Todd-Ao’s Matt Bowman and Sam Webb, while Jill Jones has moved from 4MC to take charge of sales at the Charlotte Street facility.
Commented Nick Pannaman, divi- sional director of Liberty Livewire: “Since the Todd-AO Group was taken over by Liberty Livewire last year, there have been greater opportunities for enhancing our overall service to clients through sharing resources between all the facili- ties in the group.” ■

When it came to creating the overall look of the action thriller, which co-stars John Travolta, Halle Berry, Hugh Jackman and Vinnie Jones, Sheen said he wanted to depict a high sheen of glamour, “while not being afraid of colour.
‘We were constantly mixing gels and the colour palette is pretty strong,” the director explained. “Each location had a colour palette assigned to it and the prac- tical lighting dictated the light we would use on the actors.
“For instance, if there was a green lantern, the light on the faces would be green instead of trying to create perfect flesh tones. It looked glossy and sexy –
