James Bonds past and pres- ent joined guests at the film- ing of James Bond: A BAFTA Tribute in November. Hosted by Michael Parkinson, the evening celebrated 40 years of 007 and paid tribute to Eon Productions, who were presented with a Special Award at The Orange British Academy Film Awards earli- er this year.
Since Sean Connery first burst onto the cinema screen in Dr No in 1962, cinema-going audiences from across the world have been fascinated by the suave secret agent with a licence to kill. The gadgets, the girls, villains and superb locations all help to make up the world’s most successful movie franchise.
Whether he’s fighting megalo- maniacs like Blofeld intent on destroying the world, battling crocodiles in Live and Let Die or hovercrafting on the 38th Parallel in Die Another Day, the James Bond films always deliver action packed sequences that keep the audience on the edge of its seat.
The evening kicked off with Parkinson introducing to the stage Roger Moore, star of five Bond films, where he was joined by Lois Chiles, Dr Holly Goodhead in Moonraker and Maud Adams, who played the title role in Octopussy. The new Q, John Cleese, was up next to talk through the gadgets that were first intro- duced on screen by his predeces- sor, the late Desmond Llewelyn.
Other guests who went up on stage included original villains Richard Kiel (Jaws), and Christopher Lee (Scaramanga) and Bond girls Ursula Andress, (Honey Ryder) Maryam D’Abo, (Kara Milovy) through to the stars of the latest film, Die Another Day, Pierce Brosnan, Halle Berry (Jinx), Rosamund Pike (Miranda Frost), Samantha Bond (Miss Moneypenny) and Toby Stephens (Gustav Graves).
Shirley Bassey sang two classic Bond theme tunes – Diamonds are Forever and Goldfinger, which finished off the show to rapturous applause.
Other guests at the tribute included two more former Bonds
– Timothy Dalton and George Lazenby – Sir George Martin, Barbara and Dana Broccoli, Michael G. Wilson, Shirley Eaton, Fiona Fullerton, Eunice Gayson, Serena Gordon, Guy Hamilton, Lulu, Tania Mallett, Caroline Munro, Colin Salmon, Lee Tamahori, David Yip, Rick Yune, Ken Adam and David Arnold. All have played their unique part in the Bond screen story.
Following the recording of the programme, guests were treated to a lavish party sponsored by Electronic Arts at the Science Museum, which is currently host- ing a James Bond exhibition.
Transport from the BBC to the museum was provided by Audi cars, who once again managed the unenviable task of taking guests from White City to Kensington in London traffic. An exorbitant amount of cham- pagne was provided by Taittinger, whilst Talisker supplied whisky. Tara Davies
