bafta interactive entertainment awards
BAFTA’s Fifth Annual Interactive Entertainment Awards were held on October 10 at a packed Grosvenor House Hotel in London. They were hosted by Brixton- based comedy duo Adam and Joe, whose anarchic and at times irreverent sense of humour clearly delighted a huge audience.
Despite economic uncertainty dogging a large section of the industry, the awards proved a tremendous success. Lord Puttnam gave a heartfelt speech about the ongoing convergence of technol- ogy and genre, before smartly- dressed Adam and Joe distributed twenty-one BAFTAs across all areas of interactive media.
These included a special award for the legendary Ian Livingstone whose career so far has spanned three decades of interactive entertainment – from humble beginnings in 1975 with Games Workshop to the global phenomenon of Eidos’ Tomb Raider featuring Lara Croft.
The exceptional Xbox game, Halo, took home the BAFTA – one of its eventual three – in arguably one of the most competitive cat- egories, Games Console. It beat off classy competition from one of the biggest selling games of all time, Grand Theft Auto 3, the Game Cube launch title, Pikmin, and Sony’s ICO.
The Tate Modern were also hugely successful, ending the evening with a brace of BAFTAs, including one for the new awards’ category Accessibility. I- Map, designed for the blind and partially sighted, complements the Tate’s Matisse and Picasso exhibition. The website features raised drawings and Audio to explore the artists’ work.
