The pyrotechnics and candles may have been extinguished due to the firefighter’s strike but nothing could dampen the sparkle at the British Academy Children’s Film & Television Awards in association with the LEGO Company.
From Bob the Builder’s entrance in an Audi convertible to a rapping Richard Blackwood as our host, it was a fun evening for everyone. The Awards were presented on November 24, for the fourth year running at the London Hilton on Park Lane.
A line up of some of the hot young faces from the worlds of tel- evision, music and sport guaran- teed a strong press turnout. Presenters included TV personalities Cat Deeley, Ben Shephard, Fearne Cotton, Anthea Turner, Andy Collins, Big Brother’s Jade Goody, Chelsea’s Graeme Le Saux, cham- pion sprinter Darren Campbell, soapstars Nikki Sanderson (Coronation Street), Stefan Booth (Hollyoaks) and Charlie Brooks (EastEnders) and Capital FM’s Pop Idol judge, Neil Fox.
Chloe Hanslip, 15 year old recording star of the classical world, played on stage and Nicholas Hoult, young star of About A Boy, presented the LEGO/BAFTA Kids’ Vote alongside LEGO Media’s Vanessa Chapman. However, the warmest reception of the night was reserved for Mr Boom Boom him- self, Basil Brush.
Two special awards were presented. The first to Ronald Smedley, distinguished schools producer/director and the sec- ond to Peter Orton, founder of HIT Entertainment.
In a repeat of its double whammy in 2000, SM:TV Live scooped the BAFTA for Entertainment programme and the LEGO/BAFTA Kids’ Vote.
Tess Daly collected the LEGO/BAFTA award on behalf of the team with a taped message from co-presenter Brian Dowling who was holidaying in Australia. The Kids’ Vote was decided by thousands of children across the country who had voted online and by phone in the hope of win- ning a night at the Awards.
Finally a number of thank yous: to BAFTA staff – Kelly Smith, Clare Brown and Tara Davies; Awards producer Marc Baker, an incredibly supportive and enthusi- astic Children’s Committee chaired by Nigel Pickard; and to our sponsor, the LEGO Company, who are looking forward to con- tinuing their three year associa- tion into the next few years.
