Before Lee, African-Americans found it extremely difficult to break into filmmaking but through his determination to chronicle 20th century American life, he has cut a path of critical and financial success, paving the way for a host of new black directors.
Always honest and sometimes controversial, Lee sounded a note of caution after Halle Berry and Denzel Washington both won Oscars this year. “Is this a signal that once and for all Hollywood is colourblind and we’re all on the same playing field? I don’t think so. We have to see what hap- pens,” Lee told students at Ohio’s University of Toledo.
“Let’s not get too hyped up. Let’s not go crazy and think we’ve been delivered because of what happened,” Lee said. “When Sidney (Poitier) won for Lilies of the Field, people proba- bly felt the same way, and it was another 40 years until Denzel won.”
The Academy would like to thank the Film Council and The Metropolitan Hotel for supporting this event.

Housekeeping
The monthly programme is divided into two sections for events at 195 Piccadilly, Events and Screenings. The Screenings are not usually book- able but tickets are issued 45 minutes in advance of the film. For the events, we encourage booking. Seats may be available on the day but are not guaran- teed. Tickets are issued in advance for most events, with the exception of the BAFTA at the Bar Networking Evenings.
We have only recently begun issuing tickets again for events, in the hopes that this helps members be certain when they have been successful in booking seats. For this reason, please do fill out the booking form and include ALL of the information requested.
It really does save us a lot of time if you include the informa- tion requested. If you wish to email a booking for an event, please make sure you include all of the information on the events booking form so that we can process your request.
