PITCH & RUN
PITCH & RUN
WITH RICHARD ‘ARNIE’ PUN
This year’s London Companies event, magnificently organised by Bob Clarke of the Channel Four Golf Society, took place at Tyrell’s Wood GC. Nearly nine- ty players took part. The main competi- tion was won by ITFC beating London Weekend TV on count back after both teams totalled 102 points. Congratulations to them. By the way, ITFC doesn’t stand for Ipswich Town Football Club; it’s the Independent Television Facilities Centre and they’ll host next year’s event.
The final golf day of our 1997 calendar was co- hosted with CTV (Corinthian Television). Those of you who were fortunate to be at St George’s Hill GC on that glorious August day had the opportu- nity to rub shoulders with our guest celebrity, Carl Watts from Shropshire, reputed to be the pro’ who’s brought a smile back to the tour circuit. He played some excellent golf with us and fired a final round of two under par.
Doubtless Carl must have picked up a few pointers from me and fellow Fuji golfers that day which stood him in good stead when he went to play the BMW International Open in Munich. He and Robert Karlsson finished 24 under par and needed three more holes to decide the issue with Carl losing it after finding the water on the third extra hole.
Incidentally, Carl was also awarded the Johnnie Walker Golfer of the Month in the face of very stiff competition from a whole host of top European golfers. Carl carried the day from the panel for the cheerful way he handled the pres- sure of the occasion - with spirit and a smile.
So take a tip from Carl, golfers. Always have a large tumbler of “cold tea” and keep smiling! ■
