According to Loader: “Finding the field where we shot the balloon was extremely difficult. We had to find a field that had a view out to the north east as the prevailing wind in Britain tends to be from the south west.
“It also had to have a road alongside it, be near a woodland, and be big enough for all the events of the story to take place in it. At the same time, it had to have a beautiful pastoral aspect to it.”
Thanks to McEwan’s own local knowledge, they were directed to the Getty estate at Wormsley, geographically and topographically right on the button. Said Michell: “It’s Eden! And into this
Eden I wanted to bring a blood red bal- loon. I wanted all the colours in the field to be very simple; it’s shocking when you see this red balloon come into the green field. It was very beauti- ful when we all saw it on the day.
“We tried to take the colour red out of the rest of the film and introduce it very carefully now and then. The red- ness of the balloon recurs at strategic moments – whenever Jed appears there’s something red – a red bus, a person in a red jersey, a red tomato sauce bottle, a red lamp and so on.
“It’s pretty subtle, but it’s embed- ded in there – this strange kind of the
echo that haunts the entire film,” Michell added.
For young cinematographer Haris Zambarloukos (Mr In-Between), “the overwhelming memory that lingers with me and my fellow crew members is the spirit in which Enduring Love was made.
“Technical issues about how to recreate a hot air balloon crash sequence, how to shoot a scene lit only with candles, the difficulties of location shooting without a generator all fade away.
“This was a rare opportunity to rise up to a challenge presented to us
by Roger and Kevin, who led us all by inspired example, by a standard of excellence that all of us on the crew felt obliged to try to emulate.
“That coupled with the respect and love that people have of Ian’s brilliant novel made me feel that this was a once in a lifetime opportunity to realise why I want to be a film maker,” Zambarloukos enthused. ■ QUENTIN FALK
