ISLEEP FURIOUSLY
RADULTHOOD
wanted a visual image that would work in some ways like a text, mechanically reproducible but in its relation to the viewer wholly singular and interiorised
– something like poetry.”
This is filmmaker Gideon Koppel
writing about his new documentary feature Sleep Furiously,
which has begun a
series of screenings
prior to, hopefully, major festival exposure next year.
Shot across eight months, the film, pre- viously titled The Library Van, is set in an isolated hill farm- ing community near Aberystwyth to which Koppel has long had family ties.
In the Winter
2007 issue of EXPOSURE,
Koppel wrote for us about the back- ground of the film and the shooting itself for which he was also camera- man. This is part of a later reflection on the subsequent editing process:
“The editor Mario Battistel and I maintained an associative approach to working with the material. I had logged the rushes by date rather than by subject and so we embarked on the process of engaging with the mass of material by constructing rough-cuts of one or more short films for each day of shooting.
“When sequenced in a rough chronology, these formed a four-hour piece and became the first assembly edit. Watching this sequence was the first time I sat back away from the screen and had an opportunity to become ‘partaker’ rather than ‘maker’ of the film.
“It was a deeply upsetting experi- ence - my expectation of finding a natural coherence between the disparate elements, of finding a cohe- sion, was shattered. There were no clues as to the properties, shape or colour of the film, not even an outline suggesting a journey.
“The following day we cut the four hours down to two. To cut away this amount of material in one day entailed making immediate and intuitive decisions about what to keep and what to lose based simply on a feeling...” ■

e-uniting some of the charac- ters from 2005’s award-winning street drama Kidulthood, Adulthood, set six years on, takes up the story of Sam (Noel
Clarke) after he’s released from jail. Clarke, who not only starred in but
also wrote Kidulthood, now has triple duties as he makes his feature directing debut on Adulthood, currently shooting on location in and around London.
Joining Clarke from the original film are actors Adam Deacon, Femi Oyeniran, Red Madrell, Cornell John and Madelaine Fairley along with new- comers Scarlett Alice Johnson, Jacob Anderson, Shanika Warren Markland, Nathan Constance, Don Klass and Arnold Oceng as well as top rappers Ben ‘Plan B’ Drew and Shystie.
Back behind the camera from Kidulthood is veteran cinematogra- pher Brian Tufano BSC who is originating the sequel on 16mm ETERNA 250T 8653. A career profile of Tufano will appear in the next issue of EXPOSURE. ■
