Afterword
You just read a collection of . . . somethings. These somethings were
chosen to spark new thought, laughter and conversation. They are
as much meditations as jokes and are chosen for different reasons:
some work in response, some as criticism, and some as translation of
accidental wisdom. And so, depending on your mood and the speed at
which you read, you may appreciate the book differently each time you
read it.
If you do read it again, please keep one idea in mind: equanimity.
Equanimity is a virtue shared by many of the world’s philosophies,
religions and spiritual paths, including Buddhism, Christianity,
Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Stoicism and Yoga, among many others. It
is a state of balanced non-attachment, the middle path, freedom from
desire or aversion. It frees the practitioner who was previously at the
mercy of their external conditions. Buddha described a mind filled with
equanimity as “abundant, exalted, immeasurable, without hostility, and
without ill-will.”
It is my hope that you will experience equanimity when reading this
book, and that you will carry that equanimity into your daily life.
